10 Things You Can Do Today to Reduce Your Electric Bill
What else can you do to keep your electric bill down?
- Check and clean your refrigerator condenser coils. BONUS: Put it on your calendar to do it again in 6 months if you have indoor pets or a year if you don’t.
- Try to keep something in the fridge beside condiments and a handful of essentials. Empty refrigerators run more than full ones.
- Fill your dishwasher before running it. Load it well, so you don’t have to rewash, but don’t run half loads whenever possible. BONUS: turn off the heat dry and crack it open to let dishes air dry.
- Check your heating/cooling vents if you have them. Most of them should be open and all filters should be replaced regularly to keep air flowing.
- Make an appointment to have your heating and cooling units checked or do it yourself if you know how. BONUS: Put it on your calendar once every year or two to make sure they stay in good working order.
- Make an appointment to have a thermostat installed or do it yourself.
- Load your washer properly so you only need to run it once to clean your clothes. BONUS: use a cold water wash to save gas on heating.
- Turn off your computer when it isn’t in use. Yes, I know, it’s hard to wait 30 seconds for it to turn back on, but it’s worth it!
- Turn off your stereo and television when they aren’t being actively used. Game consoles, too!
- Check the weather strips on your doors and make an appointment to replace them or do it yourself!
